Csaky, a macaw breeder for 20 years with a specialty in hyacinth and scarlet macaws, said the material is less important than having a “sturdy” well-constructed cage. “If the welding is done well, then the bird should be OK,” said Csaky. Square tubing might be better constructed, but welding is easier to clean, she added. Csaky recommends bars with a diameter of a quarter inch and a spacing of 11⁄2 to 2 inches. Two-inch spacing can make it easier to see the bird through the cage bars, but 11⁄2-inch spacing is better for their beaks, which they use to climb around the cage. “Wider spacing is harder on their beaks.”

Keeping your macaw entertained and providing a large enough cage can reduce the bird’s desire to chew its cage apart, Abramson said. “The larger the cage, the less likely they’re going to go through it.”

this cage is huge and while I'm not housing a bird, i believe it would work for almost any sized parrot..i am using this as a small indoor sleeper cage for a baby kinkajou and its absolutely perfect..this cage is so well made, easy to assemble and sturdy...its equal in size and construction to cages priced closer to 1,000 dollars and only lacks better colors
